Forrest Gump finds himself in Berlin, Germany during the events of Gump & Co. when he is transferred there from Alaska after the Exxon Valdez incident in order to get him "as war away from here as possible".
While in Berlin, he is assigned to the dirtiest job in the Army, which is to clean mud off of tank treads. He re-encounters a demoted Sergeant Kranz (who is actually now merely a Private) and plays football for the post team, the Swagmien Sour Krauts. During a football game, he is assigned to kick the ball, having never done so before. He kicks it too hard, well over the Berlin Wall, and in doing so interrupts a World Cup game between East Germany and the Soviet Union, causing the game to end in a 3-3 tie. A riot ensues which causes the destruction of the Berlin Wall.
